Voltron: Arizona’s 1st blended craft beer

By Jess Harter Monday, February 7, 2011

Five Arizona craft brewers have teamed up to create what they’re calling the state’s first collaboratively blended craft beer for the Arizona Beer Week, which runs Feb. 19-26.

The beer, an Imperial Red Ale that will debut at the Strong Beer Festival on Feb. 19, is being called Voltron. (The name comes from classic ’80s children’s television series in which five young pilots fly five robot lions that can be combined into one machine.)

The five Arizona breweries – SanTan in Chandler, SunUp in Phoenix, Papago and Sonoran in Scottsdale and Thunder Canyon in Tucson – each brewed their own unique version of an Imperial Red Ale.

This week, three barrels from each brewery are being combined in a 15-barrel tank at SanTan. A small amount of the resulting blend will be available at each brewery, as well as 30-40 Valley bars and restaurants, during Beer Week.

Each of the five breweries also will be offering their Imperial Red during the week.
