Jimmy Peng of Scottsdale devoured more than 16 slices of pizza in 15 minutes to win Flancer’s Pizza-Eating Contest for the second time in three years.
Peng was the 2009 champion, but finished second to Thomas Gilbert of Las Vegas last year. The Gilbert restaurant barred non-Arizona residents from this year’s contest.
Peng’s 16-and-a-quarter slices – the equivalent of more than two 18-inch pies – were just enough to fend off runner-up Gus Beisel of Tempe, who finished 15 slices.
Jake Stocky of Gilbert was third with nine slices.
A total of 21 people competed in this year’s 11th annual event, which caps a month of fundraising for the Wounded Warrior Project.
