Wild Side Grill, the five-year-old steakhouse-turned-bar-and-grill at Power and Pecos roads in Queen Creek, will close Sept. 30.

Kevin Dettler, a South Dakota farmer and avid big-game hunter, originally opened the restaurant as Trophy’s Steakhouse, a 3,000-square-foot space decorated with trophy mounts of the “North American 29,” all the big-game species found on the continent.

Highlights included five bears in the middle of the dining room and four bighorn sheep on a rocky outcropping behind the bar.

Brett Dettler, one of Dettler’s sons who helped open and run the restaurant, left in 2012 to launch Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company in Gilbert, and Trophy’s tried to rebrand itself as the more casual Wild Side Grill last year.

Today, though, Kevin Dettler posted on Facebook:

Dear Friends,

Becky and I along, with our daughter Nicole and our sons Kiel and Brett, would like to thank you for being customers at the Wild Side Grill, or Trophys Steakhouse as it was previously known.

We are writing at this time with the exciting news that we have sold the restaurant.

You have been the greatest customers in the world, which made this decision extremely difficult. We also have enjoyed, and hope to continue, all the friendships we’ve developed over the past five and a half years.

The final day for the Wild Side Grill be September 30, 2014. We will be offering some tremendous daily specials as we “burn” up our inventory. Please check with the Wild Side Grill for current happenings and specials.

Sometime next week we will be having two special parties, one for the mug club members and the other for the wine club members. We will be sending out more information on these, so please look for these updates through email or Facebook.

Sincerely and again thank you for your patronage.

No word yet on what type of restaurant will replace Wild Side or when.
