Arizona Beer Class: Fate Candy Bar Milk Stout

By Jess Harter Thursday, October 23, 2014

(Arizona Beer Class is an ongoing Thursday series profiling Arizona’s noteworthy craft beers. See previous Arizona Beer Classes here.)

This week, Fate Brewing founder Steve McFate talks about his fall seasonal Candy Bar Milk Stout (6% ABV), which will be released Monday.

FateCandyBarMilkStoutBeer style: “It’s a milk stout conditioned with honey-roasted peanuts, cacao nibs, whole vanilla beans, and sea salt,” McFate says. “Sweet, but not cloy.”

The inspiration: “It was inspired by a peanut butter cup!  We brew a lot of one-off beers and thought it’d be fun to experiment with our base milk stout by adding candy-inspired ingredients.”

The debut: “Late summer 2013 – and it won a silver medal at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival in the fall.”

The name: “We don’t name very many of our beers, but patrons would come in and say, ’I’d like one of those candy bar beers,’ hence the name stuck.  There was a lot of discussion amongst patrons and crew — does it taste more like a peanut butter cup or Snickers?”

One-sentence description: “A liquid version of your favorite candy bar!”

Where to find it: “It will be released on Oct. 27 at the brewery. We’re opening early that day (11 a.m.) for the tapping party. Because it’s limited supply, we’re limiting growler sales to a maximum of one 64-ounce or two 32-ounce per person. We’d like as many people as possible to get a treat this Halloween season!”
