Northern California-based Black Bear Diner, which made its Arizona debut in Gilbert in 2008, is expanding its footprint in the East Valley.

The inexpensive, family-friendly chain is taking over the former Applebee’s on the northeast corner of Alma School and Queen Creek.

A mid-November opening is planned.

A company source tells MXSW another location soon will be announced in Tempe.

Black Bear Diner currently operates 68 restaurants in eight western states.

Its all-day menu features American classics like chicken-fried steak, housemade meatloaf, and slow-cooked pot roast.
