Mellow Mushroom, an Atlanta-based chain started by three college students in 1974, has opened its third East Valley location on the northeast corner of Stapley and Baseline in Mesa.

The barn-like pizzeria – 7,200 square feet plus a 2,000-square-foot patio – sits on the site of a former On The Border, which was leveled several years ago, near the AMC Grand 24 theaters.

The hippie-themed concept offers 13 specialty pizzas with monikers such as Kosmic Karma, Magical Mystery Tour, and Maui Wowie. The menu also has salads, sandwiches, burgers, and calzones.

Like the Tempe and Ahwatukee locations, there are 48 beers on tap, plus more in bottles and cans.

From 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, there are nine lunch specials for $4.99 each.

Happy hour specials from 3 to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily include half off all appetizers and most alcohol.
