Alamo Drafthouse Cinema picks south Tempe for 2nd Arizona location

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema still is a few months from making its Arizona debut in south Chandler, but it’s already picked its second location.

That location is the under-redevelopment Lake Country Village shopping center on the northwest corner of Lakeshore and Baseline in south Tempe, according to Chris Coppola at AZ Central.

The site, halfway between Rural and McClintock, previously was home to a six-screen theater complex in the 1980s and ’90s.

AZ Central’s story is based on information the developer provided to the city. An Alamo spokesman declined to comment.

Texas-based Alamo combines a multi-screen theater complex with a restaurant and craft beer bar. It’s known for its support of independent and controversial films, and its strict movie etiquette rules.

Craig Paschich, who stepped down as Alamo’s CEO to become the chain’s Arizona franchisee, has said he’d like to open as many as eight locations in the state over the next decade.
