The Halal Guys, the famous street carts that have been selling Middle Eastern food in New York City for 25 years, are coming to the Valley.

According to AZ Central, an investment group plans to open 15 bricks-and-mortar restaurants in Arizona over the next five years.

The first will open in the former ASU bookstore on Rural, between Apache and University, around the first of the year.

Other Valley locations are in the works for Gilbert, Scottsdale, Tucson, and Phoenix.

The Halal Guys, who debuted in 1990, serve gyro meat, falafel, and chicken either in a platter or wrapped up in pita bread. Their signature dish is a chicken platter.

The three founding partners started with just a hot dog cart on West 53rd Street and Sixth Avenue in New York City. Today, they operate five street carts and two restaurants in NYC.

The founders announced franchising opportunities last year and sold more than 200 worldwide in less than a year.
