Venezia’s Pizzerias to no longer offer meat toppings (as of April 1, get it?)

By Jess Harter Thursday, March 31, 2011

We thought this press release from Venezia’s New York Style Pizzeria was a creative way to offer a one-day discount on its vegetarian speciality pizza. It’s not like anyone would seriously believe the rest of it, right?

AS OF APRIL 1, 2011, THE DAY OF THE MEATBALL HAS ENDED; VENEZIA’S PIZZERIA TO NO LONGER SERVE MEAT TOPPINGS

In support of the efforts of vegetarians in Arizona, Venezia’s is turning away from meat toppings, creating a full vegetarian menu.

What: Venezia’s New York Style Pizzeria will no longer be topping pizzas with any meat products in support of the efforts of vegetarians in Arizona. Too long has the Italian-American community sided against vegetarians. “The day of the meatball has ended,” proclaimed Venezia’s owner Domenick Montanile – slamming his fist down on the counter. Customers will be able to enjoy the 11 current vegetable toppings along with the new addition of cauliflower, eggplant, watercress, turnips and brussel sprouts. Future planned topping additions include bok choy and lemon grass. To create a full vegetarian menu,

Venezia’s will also remove the meat products from their other menu items. Venezia’s will now offer lasagna and “meatballs” with ground tofu, as well as buffalo wings made from soy protein.

To unveil the new menu, Venezia’s has been working with both the US and Chinese governments to solidify logistics to bring a 7,000 pound block of tofu to the Tempe location on March 31. Several trucking companies have bid for the US portion of the transport of the Guinness record breaking block – see Friday’s Southwest Food Operations Gazette for further details. The new block will be on display in the parking lot of the Tempe Venezia’s location for a full 12 hours before being moved to a secure, refrigerated facility. Venezia’s apologizes in advanced to members of the LA Fitness location that it shares a complex with for any inconvenience that the bean block may impose.

With this menu change, Venezia’s hopes to decrease its carbon footprint on the environment. In support of this new initiative, all Vegetarian Specialty Pizzas will be 15% off on April 1 – simply provide promotion code: SM277.
