The 12th annual Arizona Strong Beer Festival – considered by many to be the state’s premier beer event – takes place Saturday at Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix. Here’s what you need to know:
There will be nearly 200 different beers
More than 70 brewers come from all over the country, from Hawaii to Boston, Alaska to Lousiana. Although the fest’s original focus was on strong beers (many over 10% alcohol), it has evolved over the years to feature IPAs, pale ales, wheat beers, stouts, barley wines, even ciders. Some brewers bring one-of-a-kind beers made especially for the event.
The event is outdoors, regardless of weather
The gates open to the public at 1 p.m. (VIPs get in at noon, but those tickets are sold out.) Admission is $40 and includes a 4-ounce tasting mug and 15 drink tickets. Designated drivers get in for just $10. Attendance is capped to avoid overcrowding, so plan to arrive early if you don’t already have tickets. The fest ends at 5 p.m.
There are many ways to get to the festival
On-site parking is free. Take Third Street north from Indian School Road and follow directions. Many attendees prefer to take the light rail, which has a stop at the park. A large group of people ride bicycles to the event after a pre-fest brunch at nearby SunUp Brewery.
Food will be available at additional cost
Food vendors will be set up at the fest, but food is not included in price of admission. You are not allowed to bring your own food. In addition to SunUp, other nearby businesses also will host pre-festival brunches, including O.H.S.O. Brewery and Province Restaurant.
No teenagers, no dogs, no guns …
The fest is for those 21 and over, although children under 8 can attend if accompanied by parent. You must have a valid ID. Not allowed: Weapons, pets, backpacks, containers, outside food and water bottles. (Bottled water will be provided for free.)
