More things to do this weekend: Lagunitas Night, cheese cracking

By Jess Harter Friday, March 9, 2012

If you subscribe to the MXSW Weekend Guide, you already know about the top things going on this weekend.

(If you don’t get that newsletter, you subscribe at the top of the left column of this page.)

But there are a lot of other things going on as well, including:

Laguitas night

In one of the more unusual beer promos you’ll see, Tony McGee, the owner of California’s Lagunitas Brewing Company, will be at Flanny’s in Tempe at 8 tonight … to play a couple sets of acoustic blues on guitar.

McGee (pictured above) was a member of a reggae band (he also worked in the printing industry) before becoming interested in beer in the 1990s and opening his brewery.

A half-dozen Lagunitas beers – IPA, Pils, Wilco Tango Foxtrot, Dogtown Pale Ale, Gnarly Wine and Hop Stupid – will be on tap tonight.

Willie Mays signing

I usually don’t write about restaurants outside the East Valley, but it’s worth noting baseball Hall of Famer Willie Mays will be at Don & Charlie’s in Scottsdale at 5 p.m. today to sign a few autographs for his charitable foundation.

No word on how long the Say Hey Kid, considered by many to be the greatest baseball player ever, will be signing.

Friday beer class

If you missed the Blue Moon seasonal ale taste-testing Wednesday at Papago or Thursday at Taste of Tops, you can cast your vote for their Blackberry Tart, Caramel Apple Spiced Ale or Dark Chocolate Bacon Porter at 7 p.m. tonight at the Watering Hole at Whole Foods Chandler.

The prototypes will be part of James Swann‘s weekly Friday night beer class. Cost is $5.

Cheese ‘cracking’

Speaking of Whole Foods, all stores will participate in the annual “Crack Heard Around The World” – the breaking into wheels of 24-month-aged Parmigiano Reggiano cheese – at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The operation requires five different types of knives. Free samples of the cheese will be handed out. Find out more.
