I caught the tail end of “Stouts, Steaks & Pancakes,” a fundraiser for the Beer for Brains Foundation, at the Hungry Monk last night. A huge crowd ensured the prime rib and cold-aged ribeye were long gone by the time I arrived, but there still were pancakes available.

Hungry Monk Chandler AZThe buttermilk pancakes came with a maple syrup made with Borderlands’ Moche Dolce vanilla porter and a berry syrup made with Bells’ cherry stout. I paired the cakes with Great Divide’s oak-aged chocolate Yeti.

Both of the syrups, as well as an equally delicious steak sauce, were created by the Monk’s Gidi Goldberg. You can follow his adventures in cooking with beer on Facebook at, appropriately, Cooking with Beer.

The Monk’s next beer event will be a promo night for Tap It Brewing, a new brewery from San Luis Obispo, Calif. Sample their IPA and pale ale, and score some brewery swag, from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 30.
