Opening today: Handlebar in Tempe

Handlebar & Grill, the latest concept from Mill Avenue restaurateur Julian Wright, officially opens its doors at 3 p.m. today.

Located on the west side of Mill, between Sixth and Seventh street, Handlebar is modeled after a German beer garden with a focus on being bike- and dog-friendly.

The bar will offer 24 beers on tap and 24 by the bottle. (See food & drink menus here.)

The small food menu includes five kinds of bratwurst (from Schreiner’s in Phoenix), a burger made from Arizona grass-fed beef, freshly made pretzels, fries and sauerkraut.

Handlebar will be open 3 p.m.-2 a.m. through Oct. 1, then expand its hours to 11 a.m.- 2 a.m.

Wright also owns La Bocca Urban Pizzeria and Modern Canteen Tequila Bar, the latter just two doors down from Handlebar. His past Mill ventures include The Library and Jax Thai Bar.

Wright has reached a tentative agreement with Apache Junction’s Handlebar Pub & Grill for rights to the “Handlerbar” name. The A.J. craft beer bar will debut a new moniker soon.
