Opening today: Bombay Spice Grill

By Jess Harter Monday, March 4, 2013

It took almost six years longer than expected, but Bombay Spice Grill finally opens in Tempe today.

The Indian restaurant originally had planned to open in 2007 at the then-new Tempe Marketplace, but there were problems with the lease.

After looking at several other locations, owner John Kapoor eventually launched Bombay Spice Grill & Wine in northeast Phoenix. He later opened a second location in Chicago.

Now Tempe finally is getting its Bombay Spice Grill – next to the Jimmie John’s at Vista del Sol, an ASU student-housing complex at Sixth Street and Apache. Hence, no “& Wine” in the name.

There are other big differences, as well. The Tempe eatery is not a sit-down restaurant, but rather a fast-casual one that will focus on quick service, takeout and delivery.

Most of the customized rice bowls, wraps, and salads are less than 500 calories, and there are lots of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.
