Up to 20,000 people expected at My Nana’s Salsa Challenge on Saturday

Tempe, AZThe Valley’s best salsa-makers will compete Saturday in the 29th annual My Nana’s Salsa Challenge, one of the Valley’s longest-running culinary events.

Up to 20,000 people will sample 100-plus hot and mild salsas from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and vote for the festival’s People’s Choice Award. Meanwhile, judges will select winners in restaurant, business, and individual categories. The grand champion wins $1,000.

A Margarita Mix-Off will take place from 12:30-3:30 p.m. with bartenders vying for the best margarita. There also will be live music from local bands The Chadwicks and Champagne Tap , and a kids zone with bounce houses and interactive games.

Tickets are $10 at any Fry’s or Fry’s Marketplace store in the Valley or $15 at the gate. Children under 12 get in free. VIP tickets, which include food and beverage in an air-cooled tent, are $55.

There will be a $10 charge for parking at Hayden Ferry (Rio Salado & Mill) or the US Airways Garage on Ash.  An alternative is to take the light rail to stop #21 (Mill & Third).
