A year after opening in downtown Mesa, Bubba Phatz BBQ is closing its doors

Bubba Phatz BBQ, which opened last summer in downtown Mesa, is closing, according to a Facebook post from owner Brian Banasek:

We regret to inform ya that Bubba Phatz in Mesa will be closing its doors forever but the good news is you can still visit us in Phoenix.

After a stint as chef at de la Cruz Bistro, Banasek opened Bubba Phatz in the former Sugar Shack building next door, across the street from the Mesa Arts Center.

One of the factors in the closure, according to Banasek, was the light rail construction along Main Street.

(Pictured: When I visited two weeks ago, the north side of Main was closed, and the entrance to the parking lot shared by de la Cruz and Bubba Phatz was blocked.)
