Tuesday Dish: $2 Twilly Dogs, Portillo’s opening, new Gilbert doughnut shop

$2 Twilly Tuesday

Pittsburgh Willy’s in Chandler launches $2 Twilly Tuesdays today. Every Tuesday, get the hot dog shop’s unusual creation – a quarter-pound hot dog served on a Twinkie “bun” with peanut butter and bacon – for just $2 and taste for yourself why it’s generated international interest. There’s also a vegetarian option with a slice of banana, peanut butter and Nutella.

Portillo’s Tempe opening

Chicago-based Portillo’s opens its first East Valley location at 10 a.m. today at Tempe Marketplace. The fast-casual chain’s Arizona debut in Scottsdale earlier this year drew a crowd of nearly 10,000 – the largest in Portillo’s history – so expect some long lines this morning on the northeast corner of McClintock and Rio Salado. Portillo’s menu includes Italian beef, Italian sausage, burgers, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches.

New Gilbert doughnut shop

Good Donuts, which offer more than two dozen varieties of doughnuts for 88 cents apiece (or $8.58 per dozen), has opened on the northeast corner of Gilbert and Guadalupe in Gilbert. Also on the menu: Sandwiches and coffee drinks. Hours are 5 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 6 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

New Il Vinaio chef

There’s a new chef at Il Vinaio, the somewhat-Mediterranean-themed restaurant and wine bar in downtown Mesa. Taking over the kitchen is Jordan Salyer, who’s spent the past two-plus years working under House of Tricks chef Kelly Fletcher. Look for Salyer tio unveil a new fall/winter menu next month.

Gilbert sushi Groupon

Ahi Revolving Sushi, one of the Valley’s few conveyor-belt sushi restaurants, is offering a Groupon for a $25.50 lunch for two for $12. The Gilbert Town Square eatery also has options for $28 worth of sushi for $14 or $50 worth for $25. Find info here.
