If you’re a fan of Belgian beers, Thursday’s monthly tap takeover at Flanny’s in Tempe is a not-to-be-missed event. Instead of a specific brewery, this month’s featured guest is Vanberg & DeWulf, the first company dedicated to importing Belgian beers into the U.S.
One of the jewels of the Cooperstown, N.Y., importer’s portfolio is Dupont, which will be represented by five beers Thursday. The highlight is its world-class Saison Dupont, considered one of the world’s best beers and the measuring stick for the style.
The brewery’s highly acclaimed Bière de Miel, made with the prized honey from acacia tree blossoms, and Avec Les Bons Voeux, a Christmas beer whose name translates to “With best wishes,” also will be on tap.
All three beers are on Complex Media’s oft-referenced list of “100 Beers to Try Before You Die.â€
Also on that list is Hop Ruiter, a strong golden ale that combines Belgian’s aromatic esters with an American-friendly hoppiness. It’s a “cooperation beer” between V&D and Belgium’s Schelde Brewery.
The 17 beers on tap Thursday also will include Olvisholt Lava, an Icelandic smoked imperial stout that was named one of 2012’s top 25 new beers by Draft Magazine, and Diversey and Lille, a collaboration between Chicago’s Two Brothers and France’s Castelain.
