When Scottsdale home brewer Phil Spivey decided to upgrade his beer-making equipment, he wanted to set up the ultimate home brewery. The problem? He couldn’t find equipment where, in his words, “high quality, functionality and reasonable cost intersected.”
Thus, the idea for Bru Gear, a line of stainless steel kettles and fermenters, was born. It’s no pipe dream. Spivey and his collaborators have several decades of experience with product development and manufacturing. In fact, Spivey currently is helping to install the brewing system at The Perch, the soon-to-open pub and nanobrewer in Chandler.
Spivey has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $50,000 by Feb. 16. In just the first few days, he’s already collected pledges for more than $7,000. Contributors will receive rewards ranging from bottle openers to brew kettles.
If he raises the money, Spivey will be able buy an entire roll of stainless steel, an amount that will allow him to sell kettles and fermenters at a lower price.
