Bill Johnson’s Big Apple closes longtime Mesa location

Troubled Bill Johnson’s Big Apple has closed its Mesa location, leaving the former landmark Valley chain with just one restaurant in operation.

Founded in 1956, the Bill Johnson’s grew to five restaurants in the Phoenix area, well-known for its barbecued ribs, steaks, and deep-dish apple pie.

The chain filed for bankruptcy in 2011.

The Mesa Bill Johnson’s was on Main Street, just west of Stapley. A north Phoenix location was closed last month.

Those closures leave only the original location at 38th Street and Van Buren in Phoenix.
