Armato, who created the well-respected Skillet Doux and The Killer Dish blogs as well as the PHX Food Nerds message boards, replaces Howard Seftel, who retired last month.
In the wake of print journalism’s financial collapse, Seftel was the last remaining full-time staff dining critic in Arizona.
Armato now inherits that role, although the newspaper is redefining it, including the traditional anonymity of the job. In fact, the paper ran Armato’s photo (shown above) with the hiring announcement.
Hiring ads for the position indicated the dining critic’s new role would include high-profile appearances at public events and in other media.
