Allison has been one of the stars of the Valley’s food truck scene, first with frank., which sold locally made hot dogs and sausages, then United Steaks of Cheese, which made gourmet cheesesteaks.
frank., both the truck and the concept, were put up for sale earlier this month. USOC announced it was closed for the summer, but Allison admits it’s done, too, despite the popularity of both trucks.
“It’s OK,” he says. “I got stuck doing too much admin stuff (and was) less focused on food. It’s not necessarily a money thing.”
But Allison, who was chef at Skeptical Chymist in north Scottsdale before getting into food trucks, isn’t just sitting around and relaxing this summer.
He’s partnered with Tempe-based margarita mix maker Chaco Flaco as its new executive chef, and he’s started a catering business.
He’s also keeping his hand in the food truck scene, like offering a “pop-up” menu out of the Superstition Farm food truck at the Gilbert Food Truck Food Court from 5:30-9 p.m. Friday and Queen Creek Feastival from 5:30-9 p.m. Saturday.
His menu this weekend:
- Tira de Asada Tacos: Argentinean braised short rib, pickled red onions, and chimichurri.
- Thai Curry Chicken Wings: Panang coconut curry, Fresno and lemongrass slaw, basil ranch.
- Green Chili Mac n Cheese stuffed burger: With charred pico de gallo, avocado, “elote spread” with queso fresco-cilantro fries.
Prices will be determined after ingredients are purchased.
