Brunchies in downtown Chandler to close Saturday

By Jess Harter Thursday, May 12, 2016

Brunchies, a downtown Chandler breakfast-and-lunch spot owned by the family behind the Serrano’s Mexican Food restaurants, will close Saturday after more than three decades in business.

“We thought long and hard,’’ Stephanie Serrano tells the East Valley Tribune. ‘‘It was not easy, but in the end we decided to sell the building to a developer and concentrate on our Mexican restaurants.’’

Brunchies opened in 1979 on Boston Street, just east of Arizona Avenue, in a building that originally housed the Serrano family’s clothing store in 1919.

Stephanie Serrano says the photos of family and customers on Brunchies’ walls will be moved to the family’s flagship Mexican restaurant around the corner on Arizona, just south of Boston.

The public will be able to buy the cafe’s other memorabilia and fixtures – including its signature fountain and talking horse head – at a sale from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 21.

The Serranos also closed their Mexican restaurant in Gilbert last week after its lease ran out, but continue to operate five popular locations in Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, and Queen Creek.
