Guedo’s Cantina Grille, the beach-themed cantina that closed in downtown Chandler in late December after three decades in business, has found a new home and a new name.
Construction has begun on Guedo’s Taco Shop, which is taking over the former Jimmy’s of Chicago space on the northeast corner of Gilbert and Pecos.
(Jimmy’s moved to the northeast corner of Lindsay and Williams Field last year.)
The original Guedo’s (pictured below) was sold when Chandler approved plans for a developer to build a major commercial and residential project on surrounding property.
The new owner is Andrew Erickson, who’s getting a helping hand from the former longtime owner, William “Guedo” Samora III.
(That’s Samora sitting in front of the new location in the photo at top.)
Samora tells MXSW the new Guedo’s (pronounced ‘‘WAY-dohs’’) will have the same menu, same chef, and much of the staff from the original surf shack.
Unlike the original (pictured again), where most of the seating was outdoors, the new location is all indoors. There’s not even a patio.
Still, Samora says the interior will attempt to capture some of the original vibe by using lawn chairs and other outdoor elements.
A late November opening is planned.
