Joe’s Real BBQ in downtown Gilbert will give away more than 5,000 free meals during its 19th annual Free Barbecue Day on Wednesday, May 2.

The meals will be handed out from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 4-8 p.m.

Diners will have a choice of a pulled pork or chicken breast sandwich along with coleslaw, BBQ pit beans, a chocolate chip cookie, and a drink. Children will get small sandwiches.

There’s a limit of one meal per person, and you must be present to get a free meal. No takeout. No other menu items will be available all day.

New this year: Fitness studio FunkFit will help you work off your meal during the lunch session, and bluegrass band Romen Buffalo will play during dinner. A balloon artist will entertain children.

Attendees are encouraged to bring cans of food (fruit in particular) or boxes of cereal to donate the neighboring Open Arms Care Center.  Donations are not required for the free meal.
