Bashas’ has announced the winners of the supermarkets’ third annual Donut Flavor Craze Contest, which invites Arizonans to suggest new sweet or savory doughnut flavors:
- Creamy Horchata Donut: Loaded with a semi-sweet, horchata-flavored filling, and then covered with a velvety cinnamon topping (suggested by 9-year-old Aliyah from Phoenix).
- Italian Panini Donut: Features pesto and diced sun-dried tomatoes folded into the batter, with a generous topping of shredded mozzarella, diced bacon, and freshly-chopped basil (suggested by adult Cinthia from Glendale).
No last names were released. This was the first year adults were allowed to enter the contest. The winners were chosen by a panel of celebrity judges.
Both doughnuts will go on sale at Bashas’ stores statewide on Friday, June 1, which is National Donut Day. Ten percent of all proceeds that day will be donated to The Salvation Army.
In a separate online poll on the grocer’s website, a Piña Mango Donut (from 10-year-old Lanaya from Phoenix) and a White Pizza Grilled Cheese Donut submitted (Liz from Phoenix) were named “People’s Choice†winners.
