Indian shawarma? Mexican shawarma? Chinese shawarma?
These are just a few of the options at Shawarma Corner, an Iraq-based concept that’s opened its first U.S. location on the northwest corner of College and Sixth Avenue adjacent to ASU’s Tempe campus.
Actually, according to the restaurant’s website, it’s the only location outside of Iraq.
Shawarma Corner’s menu offers beef or chicken shawarma – meats grilled on a vertical spit in a style familiar to fans of Middle Eastern fare – in a variety of flavor profiles.
‘‘The Iraqi way,’’ served on white basmati rice or Iraqi bread, and ‘‘the Lebanese way,’’ rolled in fresh-baked saj flatbread, are probably the most traditional.
Or you might try ‘‘the Chinese way,’’ atop a bowl of sauteed vegetables and noodles; ‘‘the Mexican way,’’ rolled into a burrito with black beans, corn, jalapenos, and chipotle sauce; or ‘‘the Indian way,’’ with red chiles, red onions, garlic, and Indian red sauce.
There’s even ‘‘the American way’’ – served on a toasted bun like a burger.
Prices aren’t quite as inexpensive as typical shwarma places – most menu items at Shawarma Corner are $7.99-$8.99 – but you won’t find the variety anywhere else.
