Opening this weekend: The White Rabbit in downtown Gilbert

The White Rabbit, a basement speakeasy with a secret door requiring a password, officially opens to the public at 5 p.m. Sunday in the historic Heritage Court Building on the northeast corner of Gilbert and Cullumber in downtown Gilbert.

But if you’ve signed up for the bar’s email list through its website, you should have received an invitation to the VIP opening at 5:05 p.m. Saturday.

The Heritage Court Building already is home to several existing businesses, most prominently Romeo’s Euro Cafe.

Downstairs, The White Rabbit boasts a Prohibition-era decor and offers classic handcrafted cocktails, whiskeys, local wines, and craft beers.

A small bites menu of shared plates includes duck wings, charcuterie boards, olive trays, and pretzel bites.

You’ll need to join the email list to get the password (psst, it’s ‘‘ginger snap,’’ at least to start). Look for the red light at street level to find the entrance.

The White Rabbit’s hours are 5 p.m.-midnight Sunday-Thursday and 5 p.m.-2 a.m. Friday-Saturday.
