Cornish Pasty Company has popularized pasties in the East Valley since 2005. But CPC’s Tempe and Mesa locations no longer are the only places specializing in the British pocket sandwiches.
Sonsons Pasty Company has just opened on the northeast corner of Recker and Brown in east Mesa.
Sonsons offers the real deal: Owner Julie Groom and her mother, Sonia Williams (aka ‘‘Sonson’’), worked at a bakery in Cornwall, England, for eight years.
The pair have been selling pasties (pronounced ‘‘pass-tees’’) at Uptown Farmers Market in Phoenix and Superstition Ranch Market in east Mesa.
Sonsons mostly sticks to four traditional pasties, available fresh or frozen:
- Steak pasty with potatoes, onions, and rutabaga ($7.50 small, $9.50 large)
- Beef pasty with potatoes, onions, and rutabaga ($6.50 small, $8.50 large)
- Vegan pasty with lentil and walnut base and sweet potato fries, garlic-and-herb red sauce, peas, and green beans ($8.50 large)
- Sausage roll ($3 small)
Other types of pasties often are available as daily specials, but the beef pasty is the bestseller.
Sonsons Pasty Company is open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
