Snakes & Lattes,  a Canadian-based ‘‘board game cafe’’ concept, has opened its first U.S. location in downtown Tempe.
It takes over the former Z’Tejas building on Sixth Street, just west of Mill, which closed last October.
Although many Valley coffeehouses and beer and wine bars offer a small selection of board games, Snakes & Lattes has a library of more than 800 games.
The cafe charges a fee of $5 person for one-visit unlimited access to its game library. The money helps replace damaged or worn-out games.
Its staff includes ‘‘game gurus,’’ who can recommend and teach board games to patrons.
A full kitchen provides a menu of salads ($9-$11), burgers and sandwiches ($8-$12), six kinds of poutine ($7-$11), tacos ($7-$9), pizzas made on Indian naan bread ($9-$12), and more.
The bar serves craft beers (including 12 on tap), wine, cocktails, and a full range of coffee drinks.
Happy hour is 2-6 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and includes $2 off draft beer, wine, and cocktails and discounts on food. Also, draft beers are $5 all day on Wednesdays.
Snakes & Lattes, named after the classic childhood board game Chutes & Ladders, launched in 2010 and has three other locations, all in Toronto.
The Tempe location is open 7 a.m.-midnight daily.
