McFate Brewing applies for liquor license for new Tempe location

In one of the worst-kept secrets in the local craft brewing community, popular McFate Brewing is quietly working on opening a third location – this one near Mill and Southern in Tempe.

While owner Steve McFate has rebuffed several MXSW attempts over the past months to get more information, the brewery has applied for a liquor license at 201 E. Southern #111 in Tempe.

That’s about a quarter-mile east of Mill on the south side of Southern (map).

McFate launched his concept, then a 2,500-square-foot brewpub called Fate Brewing, in 2012 on the southeast corner of Scottsdale and Shea in Scottsdale. It was an immediate success and, with just 84 seats, often packed.

In 2015, McFate opened an 11,000-square-foot restaurant and production brewery in Papago Plaza on the southwest corner of Scottsdale and McDowell, about six miles south of the original.

In a 2016 legal settlement with another Fate Brewing in Colorado, McFate changed the name of his Scottsdale breweries to McFate’s Tap + Barrel (aka McFate North) and McFate Brewing (aka McFate South).

There’s been no indication yet whether McFate Tempe will have a brewing system, a kitchen, both, or neither.

There’s also been no word on when the location might open.
