I’m a little behind schedule on this one: La Morena Mexican Food opened several weeks ago on the northeast corner of Gilbert and Guadalupe in Gilbert.
It takes over the space that formerly was home to Thai restaurant Siam Orchid.
Unlike most Mexican restaurants, La Morena focuses on breakfast and lunch.
Breakfast plates ($5.99) include chilaquiles, jamon con huevos (ham and eggs), and chorizo con huevos, as well as American entrees like omelets and pancakes.
For lunch, there are burros ($3.99-$7.99), tortas ($6.99-$7.99), huaraches (pictured, $5.99-$6.99), and combo plates ($5.99-$8.99).
Tortillas, salsas, aguas frescas, and desserts are made from scratch.
Hours are 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, and closed Sunday.
