Macayo’s sells 6 of its 8 Valley restaurants to Mesa-based Kind Hospitality

Kind Hospitality, the Mesa-based company that runs several restaurants at Valley airports, announced it has purchased six of the eight Macayo’s Mexican restaurants in the Valley.

Woody and Victoria Johnson opened the first Macayo’s, then known as Woody’s El Nido, in Phoenix in 1946.

Three of their children – Sharisse, Gary, and Stephen Johnson – will continue to own Macayo’s Depot Cantina (pictured) in downtown Tempe and Woody’s Macayo in downtown Phoenix.

Kind takes over the other Macayo’s in Mesa, Ahwatukee, west Phoenix, Glendale, Goodyear, and Surprise. It plans to renovate those locations and perhaps open additional ones.

Besides licensing eateries like NYPD Pizza, OHSO Brewing, and Paradise Bakery Cafe at Sky Harbor, Kind also operates several restaurants at Mesa Gateway, including Barrio Brewing.

In addition, the company owns Virtu Honest Craft in Scottsdale and four Panera Bread locations in Tucson.
