Troubled Kona Grill closes decade-old High Street location in northeast Phoenix

By Jess Harter Monday, March 25, 2019

Scottsdale-based Kona Grill has closed its High Street restaurant in northeast Phoenix after more than a decade.

The location had opened in November 2008 in what was then known as CityNorth.

The closure leaves the upscale-casual concept with four Valley restaurants – Chandler, Gilbert, and two in Scottsdale – among 40 worldwide listed on its website.

Kona Grill, which launched in 1998 at Scottsdale Fashion Square, has struggled since the recession, and its problems seem to be worsening in recent years.

Same-store sales fell 5.9% in 2017 and 11.6% in the first nine months of 2018, leading to the November resignation of CEO Jim Kuhn just three months after he was hired.

Marcus Jundt, one of Kona Grill’s founders, and Steve Schussler took over as co-CEOs, but Schussler resigned in January.
