The Dirty Drummer reopens in east Phoenix

By Jess Harter Tuesday, May 28, 2019

The Dirty Drummer, an iconic Valley sports bar and grill that closed for renovations in December, has reopened on the northeast corner of 44th Street and Oak in east Phoenix.

Frank “Drummer” Armstrong and “Dirty Dave” Werner launched the concept in Phoenix in 1975 and opened the 44th Street location in 1980. Eventually, the pair had more than a dozen locations around the Valley in the ’80s and early ’90s.

Over the past 20 years, the chain had dwindled to the single decaying location on 44th Street, although another former location in north Mera still operates independently as Mesa Drummer.

Armstrong’s daughter, Dana, is one of the co-owners of the reworked Phoenix location.
