California sandwich chain Board & Brew to make AZ debut in Tempe

Board & Brew, a California-based chain of surfboard- and skateboard-themed sandwich shops, will open its first Arizona location in Tempe.

It will move into the former Even Stevens sandwich shop, which closed in March, on the east side of Rural between University and Apache.

Board & Brew originated in Del Mar, near San Diego, more than 30 years ago and now has 16 locations, all in Southern California.

The simple menu offers California-style hot and cold sandwiches, the most popular of which is The Turkado, featuring turkey, jack cheese, and avocado on sourdough bread.

The eateries are well-known for their orange-colored sweet and sour special sauce.

Franchises are allowed to customize their own craft beer lists. Most offer eight to 16 beers on tap.

Look for the Tempe location to open around the time ASU classes start in the fall.
