Horror-themed, gluten-free bakery Spooky’s Swirls opens in Chandler

By Jess Harter Tuesday, July 9, 2019

Spooky’s Swirls, the horror- and sci-fi-themed gluten-free bakery first reported on MXSW a few months ago, has opened on the northeast corner of Alma School and Elliot in Chandler.

Thanks to a partnership with the non-profit Horror & SciFi Prop Preservation Association, the bakery hosts a rotating display of authentic items from horror, science fiction, fantasy, and superhero films.

The HSPPA was formed in 2015 as a traveling museum for more than 3,000 props and 1,000 costumes from films like ‘‘Aliens, ‘‘Star Wars,’’ ‘‘Harry Potter,’’ and ‘‘Halloween.’’

Pastry chefs Lola Forbes and Chris Szydlowski focus solely on gluten-free baked goods, including Spooky’s Swirls (cinnamon buns), Scream Cheese Cakes, breakfast Cinna-Sammies (sausage, egg, and cheese on a sliced cinnamon bun), and prop-themed sugar cookies.

Spooky’s also sells caffeine-heavy Death Wish Coffee, billed as ‘‘the world’s strongest coffee,’’ 200% stronger than typical coffee.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Friday, Aug. 9, and a grand opening party on Saturday, Aug. 10.

Spooky’s Swirls is open 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday-Friday amd 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Closed Monday-Tuesday.
