Yatai Ramen, which has operated as a food truck for the past five years, has opened a classic 20-seat Japanese ramen shop on the south side of University, between Beck and Hardy, in Tempe.
Owner and chef Mark Kondo, who was born and raised in Japan, offers three specialty ramens: Signature Yatai with a tonkotsu base (pictured), Tokyo-style shoyu, or Sapporo-style miso (all $8.95).
The menu also has rice bowls, such as teriyaki chicken ($8.45) or pork katsu ($8.45). You can pair ramen with a bowl, plus a salad, in a combo meal ($12.95).
The tonkatsu teishoku, or house meal set, includes a chicken or pork cutlet, shredded cabbage, Japanese potato salad, tonjiru (pork miso soup), rice, and pickles ($10.95).
Yatai Ramen is open 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Closed Sunday.
