Chef Bernie Kantak opens Commander Hamburger in Phoenix

By Jess Harter Thursday, October 10, 2019

Commander Hamburger, a new casual restaurant from well-known Valley chef Bernie Kantak, quietly has opened at the Roosevelt Arts District in downtown Phoenix.

The menu features burgers and chicken sandwiches with Noble Bread buns, fries, Danzeisen soft-serve cones – and, of course, Kantak’s famed Original Chopped Salad.

Commander Hamburger takes over the former Breadwinner Knockout Sandwiches space at The Churchill.

The Churchill, a small restaurants-and-retail complex built out of shipping containers, opened in September 2018 on the northeast corner of First Street and Garfield.

Kantak rose to prominence as executive chef at the now-defunct Cowboy Caio in Old Town Scottsdale.

He left to open Citizen Public House in Old Town Scottsdale in 2011 and launched The Gladly near the Biltmore in Phoenix in 2013.

The official grand opening will be next Thursday, Oct. 17. The first 100 people in line that day will win a free soft serve every time they make a purchase for the rest of 2019.

Hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-midnight Friday-Saturday.
