Two months ago, Chicago’s Chicken Shack opened in Tempe and introduced Valley diners to Chicago-style chicken (see MXSW story).
Now, the Windy City’s most famous fried chicken restaurant – Harold’s Chicken Shack – has opened a location near the southeast corner of 16th Street and Baseline in south Phoenix.
At Harold’s, the chicken is fried to order in a combination of vegetable oil and beef tallow and drizzled with a barbecue sauce that soaks into the chicken’s skin.
Harold Pierce opened the original Harold’s on Chicago’s South Side in 1950. It’s grown into a chain with more than 40 locations in Chicago and others ranging from Georgia to Texas to Las Vegas.
Franchises are allowed to develop their own unique decor and atmosphere as long as their menus adhere to the basic chicken dinners and they use the company logo of a cook chasing a chicken with a cleaver.
Hours are listed as 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
