Pirate-themed gastropub Marauders sets sail in south Tempe

By Jess Harter Wednesday, December 4, 2019

Marauders, a pirate-themed gastropub originally intended to be called Smugglers, has opened in the Changing Hands-Trader Joe’s plaza on the southwest corner of McClintock and Guadalupe in south Tempe.

It takes over a portion of the space formerly home to Mac’s Broiler & Tap, which closed in January after 14 years.

The owner changed the name from Smugglers – the name still on the building – after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from a business in San Francisco.

The 1,600-square-foot bar and restaurant offers an ‘‘upscale culinary experience with First World favorites and flavors from Third World ports.’’

During the soft opening period, a limited menu includes clam chowder, burgers, fish tacos, mac ’n’ cheese, and steak frites.

Marauders is open for lunch and dinner daily.
