Wartega Brewing – a Brooklyn, N.Y., brewery that specializes in globally inspired ales made with historical ingredients – is moving to the Valley.
Husband and wife Merlin U. Ward and Mimi Ortega (Ward + Ortega = Wartega) opened their brewery in 2017.
Their beers, which celebrate cultural traditions, have included:
- Pinkerton, inspired by Jägermeister and made with ginger, basil, licorice, and molasses;
- Scrimshaw, made with cardamom and cinnamon, inspired by Arabic coffee they encountered in Dubai;
- Floridian, with tropical hops and citrus zest for hints of lemon, mango, grapefruit, and pear;
- Coquito, inspired by a Puerto Rican punch made with vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg.
The couple closed their Brooklyn brewery at the end of 2018 and have moved to the Valley.
They’re currently scouting locations in the East Valley to reopen the brewery this year.
