Today is Fat Tuesday, which means you’re practically obligated to enjoy some delicious pączki, especially when indulging will help out Valley non-profit St. Vincent de Paul.
Pączki (pronounced ‘‘poonch-kee’’), if you’re not aware, are Polish pastries, similar to jelly doughnuts but richer-tasting. They’re a Fat Tuesday tradition to use up all of the fat, sugar, eggs, and fruit in a household before Lent.
Here in the Valley, Bashas’ has the best deal: glazed or powdered with a variety of fillings – lemon, raspberry, custard, raisin, and (new for this year) chocolate – for 75 cents apiece.
A single pastry technically is called a pączek, but you also can call it a pączki. Or avoid the confusion by getting a half-dozen for just $2.99.
The grocery chain is donating 10% of all paczki sales from 6 a.m. to close today at all 50-plus Arizona stores to St. Vincent de Paul.
