Back in November, MXSW was the first to report Artichoke Basille’s Pizza, an award-winning pizza chain out of New York City, was opening its first Arizona location.
The 2,500-square-foot pizzeria, located on the northwest corner of Lakeshore and Baseline in south Tempe, is now open. The busy corner also is home to The Porch, Scramble, and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.
Besides its namesake artichoke pizza – artichoke hearts, spinach, cream sauce, mozzarella, and pecorino Romano cheese – other pies, available by the slice, include:
- Crab: Crab sauce, fresh mozzarella with a surimi stuffing;
- Vodka: Tomato, vodka, and cream sauce with a mix of Italian cheeses;
- Staten Island: Meatballs, tomato sauce, red onions, and ricotta cheese;
- Margherita;
- Pepperoni;
- Meatball;
- Sicilian: Olive oil, plum tomato, fresh basil, and a blend of cheeses, twice baked in a pan.
The Tempe location offers a full bar. A roll-up garage door opens to a 1,000-square-foot patio.
Cousins Francis Garcia and Sal Basille launched Artichoke in New York City’s East Village in 2008. The pizzeria was named one of the ‘‘10 NYC Slices You Have To Try Before You Die’’ by Buzzfeed.
Garcia and Basille hosted the ‘‘Pizza Cuz’’ and ‘‘Pizza Masters’’ shows on the Cooking Channel.
