The Golden Pineapple, sibling to The Sleepy Whale, opens in Tempe

The Golden Pineapple, a restaurant and lounge from the owners of Chandler craft beer bar and bottle shop The Sleepy Whale, officially opens today in Tempe.

It takes over the 5,000-square-foot building that most recently was home to Italian restaurant Quartiere, which closed last October, on the west side of Mill between Broadway and Southern.

Before Quartiere’s two-year run, the building was home to Riazzi’s Italian Garden, which operated for 72 years.

Among the diverse offerings from The Golden Pineapple’s scratch kitchen:

  • Tamala fries with Schreiner’s chorizo, cheese sauce, cured jalapeƱo, and pickled onion ($10);
  • Stone fruit salad with seasonal greens, pepita hemp crunch, shaved radish, caramelized shallot vinaigrette, and queso ($12);
  • Achiote chicken with crispy skin, chaytoe squash, summer corn, and cilantro chimichurri ($16);
  • Brisket burger with Hatch green chiles, Colby-Jack cheese, caramelized onions, and avocado aioli on a Noble bun with frites ($16, pictured below);
  • Stacked enchiladas with red or green chile pork ($14);
  • Rum roasted pineapple with a churro, coconut sorbet, and mint ($10).

There are a dozen craft beers on tap, a wine list with seven whites and eight reds, and a bunch of craft cocktails.

The Golden Pineapple is open 3-10 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-midnight Friday, 10 a.m.-midnight Saturday, and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday.

Besides The Sleepy Whale in downtown Chandler, The Golden Pineapple’s siblings include craft beer bars The Wandering Tortoise and The Theodore in Phoenix and Hops on Birch in Flagstaff.
