Italian restaurant La Calabria in Gilbert closes after 10 years

La Calabria Ristorante, a well-loved but ill-fated Italian restaurant in Gilbert, has closed permanently after 10 years in business.

Giovanni and Clara Spataro launched La Calabria, named for Giovanni’s home region in Italy, in 2008. He was the chef; she was the hostess and maker of its famed ricotta cheesecakes.

In 2015, La Calabria lost its original home on the northwest corner of Val Vista and Ray. Two years later, however, it reopened on the southwest corner of Val Vista and Williams Field.

Clara Spataro passed away unexpectedly last year.
