Sad news for the Valley’s wine community: Greg Tresner, Arizona’s first master sommelier, has died. No cause of death was given.
A Washington native, Tresner moved to Tucson in the 1990s and worked at the award-winning Cafe Terra Cotta.
In 1998, he moved to The Phoenician resort, whose then-flagship restaurant, Mary Elaine’s, was considered the Valley’s finest.
Tresner passed his master sommelier certification in 2000. To date, only 172 people have earned the title.
