20 notable East Valley restaurants and bars that opened in 2020

Morning Kick (pictured above): Breakfast and lunch eatery from the owners of a food truck with the same name opened in January at Higley and Chandler Heights in southeast Gilbert.

Goldwater Brewing: Scottsdale brewery opened its first satellite location – a 30-handle taproom at Loop 202 and Recker in northeast Mesa – in January.

Truland Burgers & Greens: Tucson-based concept featuring chopped salads and hormone-free burgers made its Valley debut in downtown Chandler in January.

Pedal Haus Brewery: Tempe brewery opened its first satellite location by replacing its former sibling, Las Palmas Cantina, in downtown Chandler in January.

Copper & Logs: European-style gastropub with a wood-fired oven from the owners of Cuisine & Wine Bistro opened in February at Greenfield and Warner in Gilbert.

The Porch: Arcadia gastropub opened a second location at Baseline and Lakeshore in south Tempe in February. A third location will open in downtown Gilbert in early 2021.

Shinme Sushi: Japanese restaurant took over a former martial-arts studio space at Gilbert and Queen Creek in south Chandler in June.

Artichoke Basille’s Pizza (pictured above): Award-winning pizza chain out of New York City opened its first Arizona location at Lakeshore and Baseline in south Tempe in June.

Que Chevere: Owners of 4-year-old Venezuelan food truck open a bricks-and-mortar restaurant in June in downtown Mesa.

The Golden Pineapple: Restaurant and lounge from the owners of The Sleepy Whale opened on Mill between Broadway and Southern in July.

Da’Bayou Creole Kitchen: The Brass Tap craft beer bar in downtown Gilbert transformed itself into a Creole restaurant in August.

B Gastrobar (pictured above): Former Cuisine & Wine Bistro at McQueen and Warner in Gilbert transformed itself into an American-style gastropub in September.

The Stillery: Nashville-based restaurant and bar featuring Southern comfort food and live country music made its Arizona debut in downtown Chandler in October.

Sweet Republic: Award-winning artisan ice cream shop made its East Valley debut in October at The Watermark on the north side of Tempe Town Lake.

SoJo’s Donuts: Bakery specializing in handmade vegan doughnuts and pastries opened at Alma School and Guadalupe in southwest Mesa in November.

The Kolache Cafe (pictured above): Bakery specializing in its namesake Czech pastries opens at Ray and Ranch Circle in Ahwatukee in November.

GuacStar Kitchen & Cantina: Plant-based Mexican concept debuted on the second floor of the Cornerstone plaza at Rural and University in Tempe in November.

Monroe’s Hot Chicken: Downtown Phoenix eatery specializing in Nashville-style hot chicken opened a second location at The Watermark on the north side of Tempe Town Lake in October.

California Fish Grill: Popular Los Angeles-based chain of fast-casual seafood restaurants made its Arizona debut at Staplay and Baseline in Mesa in December.

Sotol Modern Cocktail Kitchen: Gilbert’s first rooftop bar and restaurant, originally called Ilegal Modern Cocktail Kitchen,  opened downtown this week.
