Former Ghost Ranch chef Andrade launches Bacanora in Phoenix

By Jess Harter Thursday, March 4, 2021

Former Ghost Ranch chef Rene Andrade has reemerged with his own restaurant, Bacanora, in west Phoenix. It takes over the Grand Avenue space formerly home to Barrio Café Gran Reserva.

The 2-year-old Ghost Ranch in south Tempe closed for six months due to the covid-19 pandemic. When it finally reopened in January, it announced David Mora had taken over as chef.

In the meantime, Andrade had partnered with Armando Hernandez and Nadia Holguin of Tacos Chiwas on Bacanora, named for a town in Sonora, Mexico, best known for its mezcal.

Bacanora features simple Sonoran dishes Andrade enjoyed while growing up in Nogales.

Still in its soft-launch phase, Bacanora currently opens at 4 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays for takeout.
