Novel Ice Cream, a small Phoenix shop that’s received national attention for its ice cream sandwiches made with glazed doughnut ‘‘buns,’’ has opened a second location in downtown Mesa.

The pint-sized store – just 150 square feet – is located in the same building as the Organic Bean Cafe on the northwest corner of Macdonald and Pepper, a block north of Main.

Novel specializes in creative ice cream flavors – like the Ron Swanson, an egg custard base with maple syrup, whiskey caramel sauce, and candied bacon – made in very small batches.

There usually is 12 flavors available, eight everyday and four rotating. The ice creams also can be consumed in cones, cups, or between two Belgian-style waffles.

Novel is open noon-midnight Tuesday-Thursday, noon-1 a.m. Friday-Saturday, and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Closed Mondays.
